Abstract: This presentation will convey our experience in an innovative interprofessional education initiative, the IPE Health Promotion program (Community Learning Centre for Healthy Living) at George Brown College. This program reflects that: (i) health promotion is a common curriculum element in all health care training programs and therefore an appropriate common basis for interprofessional education; and (ii) students require interprofessional clinical placement opportunities in which to apply health promotion theory to practice. The presentation highlights our team’s activities as students from different areas of study, combining our expertise and working together to achieve a common goal in applying different perspectives in health promotion theory into practice. IPE was applied through: the exploration of new dimensions of interaction between students of different professions; the support of a health promotion preceptor in helping us to achieve our goals; designing and conducting needs assessments; and collaboration in designing and implementing a range of health promotion activities with our target populations, including the Walking Program, Blood Pressure Clinic, Healthy U Promotion Fair and the Fizzle Project. We will highlight our collaborative experiences and learning outcomes as students, ranging from initial perceptions about IPE to the practical implications, barriers as well as some interesting derivatives of our collaboration. Working together on common goals enhanced both our individual capabilities, our achievements in creating educational media (pod casts, posters) and our health promotion interventions with George Brown students and staff, our clinic patients, and with children in our day care centres.
